Control of Body Temperature

Thermoregulatory centre in brain:

  ◦ Monitors blood temperature

  ◦ Receives signals from skin receptors

Too Hot → Cool Down

• Blood vessels dilate (vasodilation) → more blood to skin → heat loss

Sweat glands active → sweat evaporates → cools body

No shivering

Too Cold → Warm Up

• Blood vessels constrict (vasoconstriction) → less blood to skin → heat conserved

No sweat

Shivering → muscle contractions → heat generated
