Exam Board: AQA
Hormonal Coordination
The endocrine system is a network of glands in the body that produce and secrete chemical messengers called hormones directly into the bloodstream to coordinate the body.
Endocrine System = glands → release hormones into blood → target organs
• Slower but long-lasting vs nervous system (fast but short)
You need to know the following glands and where they are found: (diagram)
-
Pituitary (brain)
-
Pancreas (near stomach)
-
Thyroid (neck)
-
Adrenal (above kidneys)
-
Ovaries (female pelvis)
-
Testes (male scrotum)
The pituitary gland is known as the ‘Master Gland’ because it releases hormones that control other glands.
