5.2.1 Hormonal Coordination

Exam Board: AQA

Hormonal Coordination

The endocrine system is a network of glands in the body that produce and secrete chemical messengers called hormones directly into the bloodstream to coordinate the body.

Endocrine System = glands → release hormones into blood → target organs

Slower but long-lasting vs nervous system (fast but short)

You need to know the following glands and where they are found: (diagram)

  1. Pituitary (brain)

  2. Pancreas (near stomach)

  3. Thyroid (neck)

  4. Adrenal (above kidneys)

  5. Ovaries (female pelvis)

  6. Testes (male scrotum)

The pituitary gland is known as the ‘Master Gland’ because it releases hormones that control other glands.
