7.2.4 Decomposition (Biology Only)
Exam Board: AQA
Decomposition
Decomposition is when dead matter is turned into simpler substances by decomposers (bacteria, fungi)
You need to know how the following factors affect the rate of decay:
Compost
Compost is a nutrient-rich, soil-like material made from decomposed dead organic matter. It is moist, oxygen-rich and used as a fertiliser.
Biogas (Methane)
Anaerobic decomposers make biogas CH₄ . It can be used as a fuel but cannot be stored so has to be used as it's made. It is made in a biogas generator with an optimal temperature of 30oC for maximum methane production
