4.1.1 Photosynthesis
Exam Board: AQA
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is an endothermic chemical reaction that occurs in chloroplasts in palisade cells in plants to produce glucose. It only happens in the day whilst light is available.
You need to know the following equations for photosynthesis:
-
Word Equation: Carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen (needs light)
-
Chemical Equation: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Memory Trick:
1. Plants drink water → reactant
2. We breathe oxygen → product
3. We breathe out CO₂ → reactant
4. Leftover = glucose (food)
